I'll never understand the trend toward bigger screens as a "feature". The reason I got an HTC Incredible was the 3.7" 480x800 display. Perfectly sized for that resolution, in my opinion. Why would I want a phone thats almost an inch bigger?

Also not to be a curmudgeon, as the front facing camera doesn't /bother/ me or anything, but I /never/ want anyone to know that I'm /capable/ of video calls.

The "web operating systems" in this post and "the browser as an operating system" are two different ideas. These web operating systems are essentially a Desktop Environment within a browser window.

Why would I need a Desktop Environment (a la KDE, Gnome) in a browser? What itch does this scratch?

I do just this already, actually.

I use a combination of web-based applications, a ssh client, a collection of portable apps on a usb drive (including firefox from portableapps.com) and an iPod. It all works completely seamlessly without the need for a "Desktop Environment" in the browser.

I'm still at a loss as to what bringing a Desktop Environment to the web brings you. I understand the need for web apps, not the Desktop Environment.

(Also, can't you easily setup this for yourself and run existing desktop apps using VLC? Rather than just using half-baked apps that the WebOS devs have created?

but most users aren't going to do that

Most users also don't require a persistent desktop between multiple locations. This discussion naturally leads itself to a unique set of users. :)

No you don't.

Yes, I do. I need a 1/2" frame around the edge of the machine but beyond that, I just want screen real estate. Take a look at the Sony PRS-700BC. That would be the ideal machine if it worked with the Amazon book store (ignoring the 1984-ocalypse)

I agree that it's probably a factor in the decision, but the approval process is probably a greater concern to developers.

"Instead, most developers should be monitoring one statistic: What is the browser share for my web site."

I was expecting some meaningless statistics, but it was refreshing to read this...

As someone who idles in a few web dev channels on IRC, I think it's something that bears repeating. ;)

I was asking for something like this in #startups a week or two ago. I found this as a possible solution, but unfortunately, it only works on mobile safari. Would be great if there was a cross-platform version available.

I posted a question about this on StackOverflow a while back if anyone is interested. I'm going to end up coding my own solution, but I likely wont start for a few weeks. I have a lot on the table right now.
